All I Want For Christmas Is Calm
As I reached over for a bag of parsnips the Woman next to me said, ‘I’m sick of this already’. I had noticed her vacant look as she hovered over the root veg. She was frozen, like a rabbit caught in the headlights, yet I sensed a strong urge to flee.
It made me reflect on the drive home.
At a time when many are time, resource and energy poor, is there a strategy for navigating Christmas without undue stress and overwhelm. Can we embody the peace, love and joy whilst balancing family, expectations of others and our personal needs?
So here are my thoughts and some practical strategies to help you remain calm and grounded this festive season:
Consider your energy.
- Do not get caught up in the unnecessary and let go of perfection. Think about what matters to you this Christmas and release the rest. Focus on the things that bring you joy.
- Ringfence your energy. Which means setting healthy boundaries and saying no when you need too. If an event or tradition drains you, make your excuses and do something indulgent or restorative.
Manage the expectations of others.
- Put your hand down! Be mindful of what you are committing too and remember Christmas is about meaningful connections not perfection.
- Honest communication is essential. Be realistic with loved ones about what you can manage and suggest ways others could help.
It is about you too.
- Schedule in me time doing the things that replenish. Taking a morning walk, reading your book or writing in a journal, whatever keeps you in balance.
- Do not neglect any meditative or movement based practice. Whether it is guided meditation, breath work or yoga. If your usual classes are not running then refer to you tube, there are so many great, free online practices.
Keep it simple.
- Simplify where you can with food, social events or decorating the house.
- Share jobs and suggest others can help with shopping, cooking or hosting.
Be mindful of stress levels.
- Choose one or two activities to engage in when stress levels feels high. A simple walk can help to reset and recalibrate the nervous system and clear the mind.
- Avoid over indulging in alcohol to counter the stress, it can often amplify anxiety levels.
Breathe Through Stressful Moments
- When tensions rise, pause and take a few slow, deep breaths. Use techniques like the “4-7-8” breathing method: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, exhale for 8.
Reflect and Reset
- Take time to reflect on what you’re grateful for, even in chaotic moments. Gratitude shifts your focus and calms your mind.
- Let go of guilt for stepping back or simplifying. Your well-being matters.
Christmas is about joy, not exhaustion. By simplifying, slowing down, and giving yourself grace, you’ll feel calmer and more present to truly enjoy the season.
